What Does HDTV Really Mean?

HDTV essentially translates to much more detailed picture and sound.  It is a standard of specifications within DTV or Digital Television specifications, which has many different video resolutions.

The two common resolutions widely used today are the 720p, 'p' meaning progressive, which has 1280x720 pixels, and the 1080i, 'i' for interlaced, which has 1920x1080 pixels. The difference between the two is that progressive resolution puts 60 full frames on the screen every second, while interlaced resolution puts up 30 frames of odd lines and 30 frames of even lines every second, which produces a very slight flicker but a very defined picture. Most prefer the more "stable" picture of the 720p, while others prefer the greater resolution of 1080i. The former is better for stiller viewing, as in the case of drama features, while the later is better for motion-intensive viewing, as in action films and sports.

Several TV shows today are presented in high definition. These are usually the shows with an onscreen message at the beginning with the likes of "Presented in high definition where available." This technology works best using a cable or satellite TV. To experience the clear resolution and surround sound at home, there are several things needed, like HDTV signals, a tuner to receive and decode the signals, and a high-performance display screen that can reproduce the remarkable detail and color of High Definition Televisions.

Obtaining high definition television is not difficult at all when it's broken down methodically. It starts with a TV, then with a tuner and then a connection. The quality of the sound and video are definitely better, but only with shows that are broadcasted in native high definition format. It is visibly an exciting technology that takes the ordinary act of watching television to another level.
